St. Xavier’s University all set to be established in Meghalaya

With the approval of the St Xavier’s University Bill, 2020 by the Cabinet of Meghalaya Government on November 5, 2020, the Jesuits are all set to establish a University in the state of Meghalaya. The St. Xavier’s University, which would be managed by the Jesuit community of Kohima Region, would be the third such University in the country, next only to XUB Orissa and SXUK, West Bengal, and will come a long way in ensuring quality higher education in the region. According to government sources, the university shall be placed under a Government regulatory Board as per provisions under the Meghalaya Private Universities (Regulation of Establishment and Maintenance of Standards) Act, 2012, in order to ensure that the University maintains standard of infrastructure, teaching, research, examination and extension of services, fee structure, and safeguard the interest of the state. Besides, the Board shall also ensure that student community gets quality education without commercialization. St Xavier’s University, Meghalaya, shall be the third Catholic Universities in the North East region, the others being the Don Bosco University, Guwahati, and the St. Joseph’s University, Dimapur in Assam and Nagaland respectively.
